Egypt, "A major energy supplier to Europe"

Egypt A major energy supplier to Europe

Egypt is the 12th biggest exporter of Liquified natural gas. According to the Egypt import export data reports, around 8.9 billion cubic metres of LNG exports took place from Egypt during the financial year 2022. As compared to the previous year exports, there was steady growth in Egypt's LNG exports. Whereas, in FY 2019, around 4.7 bcm of LNG exports took place.

The lowest volume for Egypt’s LNG exports was recorded in FY 2018, 2 bcm. Turkey is the leading importer of natural gas from Egypt with over 22% share. Egypt export data shows that around 2.2 bcm of liquified natural gas were imported by Turkey from Egypt. European countries were among the top markets for Egypt’s LNG exports.

Spain and France were the top LNG importers from Turkey. Spain and France were reported for over 1.4 bcm of LNG imports from Egypt during FY 2022. Italy was responsible for over 0.5 bcm of LNG imports from Egypt. Whereas, other European countries were responsible for over 1.2 bcm during last year.

Egypt serves as a major LNG supplier to Europe. But due to the conflict across the middle east region, the LNG supply to Europe and Turkey might be halted. As the Israel-Hamas conflict has lowered domestic production and aborted the export supply from Vietnam. This might leave Europe deprived of Egypt gas for a short time.

Among Asian countries, South Korea, India and China are the top importers of Egyptian gas. Also, there were some noticeable amounts of imports from Egypt. Crude petroleum oils from Egypt are among the most imported products by Egypt. The leading buyers for Egypt's petroleum products are Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany and India. Egypt ranks 25th among the top petroleum suppliers across the globe.

Apart from LNG, Egypt's key energy exports include coal. As per the Egypt customs data reports, around $40 million worth of coal was exported by Egypt during FY 2022. Middle eastern countries were among the top  importers of coal from Egypt. Saudi Arabia accounted for the 58% share in Egypt's coal imports during FY 2022.

Whereas, other major importers were the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Syria, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Bahrain and North Macedonia. On the other hand, Egypt import data reflects that around $411 million worth of coal imports were made by Egypt in FY 2022. The majority of the imports were from the United States, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
